October 27, 2024 - Foliage Flight Eastern Shore

It's ridiculous how good the weather has been the last two weeks or so -- sunny, warm, without a cloud in the sky -- so I took advantage and did a foliage flight today.

Ironically, the forest on the east side of Essex Skypark typically has the best color around, so here's a picture.

Essex Skypark and the its surrounding area.

The next best foliage area is south, across the Back River at the Black Marsh Natural Area.

That one area at picture center always has the best color.

Now crossing the Chesapeake Bay.  Visibility is excellent, with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge highlighted in the distance.

Checking out Eastern Neck Island.  This is the northern end.

Southern end of Eastern Neck Island.

Checking out Red Eye's Dock Bar at Kent Narrows.

Talisman Farm used to have three 2,000 grass runways in a triangular pattern.  They are long gone though.  Now you would never know they were there.  The farm and airport were sold sometime around 2008.   I should have bought it.  The asking price was a little high, though:  $19 million.

A closer look at what used to be Talisman Farm.

This house has a peninsula on the Wye River all to itself.

Another nice waterfront house.

A gigantic manor estate on by Decoursey Cove and the Wye River.

A closer look.

This beautiful tree-lined entrance drive caught my eye, complete with gate.

But it led to nothing!  Where is the Mansion?

Very strange.

Passing over a medieval castle-keep type house.

Very nice.

The two boats combined have more square footage than the house does!

Looking down at Morgan's Point, on the Tred Avon River, where some of the biggest waterfront mansions are located.

A closer look at Morgan's Point.  The estate at right, still under construction, is just ridiculous.

Passing by the "quaint" town of St. Michaels.  Everybody loves quaint towns.

The estate at left has a seriously excellent line of red maple trees.

The houses on this point are kind of crammed in together.

Back at Eastern Neck Island looking norther up the Chester River.

The foliage is pretty, of course, but seems kind of dull.  Just isn't popping this year.

Looking over towards Martin State Airport, while on downwind at Essex Skypark.

Charlie taxiis out in Double Trouble.

Nhu-An's 172 makes a rare appearance at Essex Skypark.

Beautiful fall Sunday at Essex Skypark but very few people were flying.
